Last week this display caught my eye at a local supermarket.

An American Burger Sauce. Tucked in between a truffled porcini cream and balsamic vinegar. Two very typical items in Emilia-Romagna where we live. But this Old West American Burger Sauce was a bit unexpected. A closer look was required!

Look closely and you’ll see that this is “Browned Onion Sauce”. Oh yeah – that’s the Sauce that we always buy when we’re … no wait. I’ve never heard of “Browned Onion Sauce”! Maybe it is a regional sauce, or just a take on our love for caramelized onions on burgers, but it’s certainly not a sauce that I would recognize as “American”.

Whether it’s an authentic American burger Sauce is really irrelevant. All 12 tubes were gone when I returned two days later. Marketing win! Just don’t expect Browned Onion Sauce on burgers when we invite you to a barbecue!
