A different kind of Christmas lights

Italian Living Posted on December 11, 2016 by DanitaApril 21, 2017

Tonight was a lovely evening of festivities in town. One of my favorites was the “fire extravaganza”. Prior to the display, a couple of great birds kept us company.

Almost Authentic Hot Dogs

Italian Living Posted on December 2, 2016 by DanitaFebruary 17, 2018

If you have ever traveled outside of your home country (or in many cases, outside of your home region), you know that “ethnic” foods morph into versions that are different.  Sometimes better, sometimes worse, sometimes just different.  I give you Exhibit A for different.

Flash from the past

Italian Living Posted on November 30, 2016 by DanitaFebruary 17, 2018

Joe needed a haircut, so today he went into the same barber shop that his father dragged him into as a child in 1966!  Different barber though 🙂 He seemed more eager this time!

What’s with the dirt?!?

Italian Living Posted on November 29, 2016 by DanitaOctober 7, 2017

No one has ever accused me of being an obsessive housekeeper.  I keep things “clean”.  But please never try to do a white glove test anywhere in my house, and do not expect to be able to “eat off of … Continue reading →

Our first Thanksgiving in Italy

Italian Living Posted on November 25, 2016 by DanitaFebruary 8, 2017

I remember my first Thanksgiving ever away from my family.  I was 18, and a foreign exchange student in Switzerland.  Thanksgiving Day came and went, and we talked a little about the American holiday, but that was all there was … Continue reading →

Maria Luigia in BorgoTaro

Italian Living Posted on November 20, 2016 by DanitaJune 13, 2020

We live on a street that goes east to west, the entire length of the north side of our town. That might sound like a lot, but it’s only about 500 meters long (.3 miles).  On our side of the street (north side), there is a large pedestrian walkway, many storefronts, and bustle.  The south side of the street is the back side of the buildings that make up the edge of the old city.  It’s easy to hurry along the sidewalk and not pay attention to any of the buildings. Right in the middle of that large expanse of wall is a courtyard with a vine and hedge covered wall with a large wooden door.

Making cornbread without buttermilk

Italian Living Posted on November 20, 2016 by DanitaDecember 4, 2016

Cooking in a foreign country is interesting.  Baking can be downright challenging!  I remember wanting to make Snickerdoodles in Switzerland in 1977.  Any self-respecting Snickerdoodle must have cream of tartar (sorry if you don’t use it in yours – you … Continue reading →

We’re back!

Italian Living Posted on October 27, 2016 by DanitaDecember 4, 2016

Home, Sweet Home! Our travels were uneventful.  We flew from Minneapolis to Washington DC, then to Dublin, then to Milano Linate.  Luggage all arrived in one piece (although the duffle bag will need a bit of repair), and the car … Continue reading →

We were up in time, but the sun was hiding.  Luzern is one of my favs, even if it is horribly touristy!! On to Luxembourg.

OMG – I understand everything that’s going on!

Italian Living Posted on June 30, 2016 by DanitaOctober 13, 2018

No – my Italian hasn’t improved by leaps and bounds.  Unfortunately.  But today was a welcome change from continual language struggles.  Today we headed to Belgium to pick up our son.  We’re going through Switzerland, and then to see some … Continue reading →
